Club History
Front Runners & Walkers San Diego (FR&WSD) was formed in 1981 and is one of over 100 Front Runner clubs worldwide. We’re proud to say that we’ve grown from a handful of walkers and runners to over 250 members and the club is proud to be the organizer of the successful San Diego Pride 5K held annually just before the Pride Parade. In 2023, the event sold out with 2,500 entries.

The club name comes from Patricia Nell Warren’s 1974 novel The Front Runner, about a gay coach and his star athlete.
Our group’s primary focus is to provide running and walking activities for lesbians, gay men and their non-gay family members and friends. We welcome runners and walkers of all abilities, from beginners to experienced athletes.
The club is very focused on providing a safe space and on being part of the community. Our annual donations to support local LGBTQ+ organizations has exceeded $300,000 in the last 7 years, most of which is derived from proceeds from the Pride 5K and generous direct donations.
