Long -time member passes away
March 8, 2018
September 20, 1944 – January 10, 2018
Ron Gaither died after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 73.
A long-time San Diego Front Runner and Walker, Ron joined the club in the 1980s, attended the 1986 Gay Games in San Francisco, ran and walked with the club, and was a regular at Sixth and Laurel on Saturday mornings.
He worked as a Registered Nurse Practitioner (RNP) for Kaiser Permanente at Zion Hospital in Mission Valley for more than 30 years. At the forefront of HIV treatment and care as the AIDS crisis emerged in the early 1980s, Ron had worked previously in the Zion diabetic clinic. Dealing with the sickness and death of many of his patients, Ron organized support groups and facilitated the transfer of valid medications to patients without health care coverage.
Stafford Bull Terriers were Ron’s passion. He raised, cherished, and professionally judged the breed at dog shows in the U.S. and abroad.
Survivors include his spouse Joe Jones of San Diego, and son Donny in Texas.
A celebration of Ron’s life is tentatively scheduled for this spring. Information will be posted on the club website.
